Apple today updated the macOS 12.3 beta release notes to warn macOS Catalina users of possible boot loop issues when installing macOS 12.3 or macOS 11.6.4 beta on a standalone APFS volume with FileVault enabled.

macOS Monterey Features on MBP

"If your Mac currently has macOS Catalina installed, installing macOS Monterey 12.3 beta or macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 beta on a FileVault-enabled volume may cause a boot loop when trying to log back into the previous volume," Apple said.

On Macs running macOS High Sierra or later, it is possible to install macOS on a separate APFS volume and then switch between versions of macOS, including betas, as if each version were on a separate disk superior. Apple has a supporting document with more details.

Apple released the first beta of macOS 12.3 earlier this week, and one of the key new features is Universal Controls. macOS 12.3 also has new emojis, obsolete kernel extensions used by Dropbox and OneDrive, removed Python 2.7, and more.
